My Summer Reading List

Recently, I’ve had a few friends ask me what recommendations I have sitting on my bookshelf that they can add to their list. And with Summer just around the corner, I thought it fitting to create a list of my favorite reads. Whether you are looking for something to binge read in one night, or to spend several weeks with while lounging by the pool, I’ve put together my best recs for it all! Happy Reading!

No. 1: “The Past is a Place in California” by Ali Rae

There is no doubt that this book makes top of my list. I met the author of this book in college, and we sat together under some incredible teaching. She has a gift that is unparalleled and this story is the PERFECT Summer read. I did binge read it in less than 2 days…but you will definitely find this book in my hands to be re-read allllll Summer long.

No. 2: “The Great Gatsby” by F. Sott Fitzgerald

Honestly, if this book isn’t on your shelf by now, you are missing out on SO much. This book is a classic, so I am sure most of you have read it (probably back in High School). But I would encourage you all to read it again. Really soak in every detail of the story. It is so captivating and the pure magic of the Jazz Age really does leap from its pages.

No. 3: “The Switch” by Sandra Brown

I am a huge fan of mystery novels. Like 90% of the time, my go-to genre is mystery/thriller. And this is one of the best I have ever read. Such an interesting plot focused around a woman who strikes an uncanny resemblance to someone who turns up dead, and agrees to then take her place in an effort to solve the murder mystery. I won’t spoil anything…but if you want a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this is a huge MUST READ.

No. 4: “Talking as Fast as I Can” by Lauren Graham

This one is for all my Gilmore Girls fans out there! I love love love Lauren Graham, and I will forever be a GG fan (#OnceAGilmoreAlwaysAGilmore). This was also a really fast read for me, but it was SO much fun. The writing style is really laid back, making it easy to throw in your tote bag and bring it with you to the beach for a quick read. It’s like having a conversation with Lauren herself, which I LOVED.

No. 5: “A Woman Who Trusts God” by Debbie Alsdorf

I have not personally read this book yet, so this one is currently in my cart and on my list to be read this Summer. It was recommended to me by my Mother-in-law and I am really excited to dig in, as the topics of anxiety and biblical womanhood explored in this book are things that have been heavy on my heart lately. Grab a copy and let’s read it together!

No. 6: “Eve” by Iris Johansen

This book is the first of a 3-part series and is for all of my mystery/thriller lovers out there. I will post links to the other 2 books in this series below (she also has quite a few spin-off series based around the same character), but start with this one. This author is easily my favorite in this specific genre. Her stories are so gripping and easy to read, I find myself flying through them in just a few days. This series focuses on a mother who wrestles through the loss of her daughter, following her journey of solving the mystery around her disappearance.

No. 7: “In the Woods” by Tana French

I had to throw one more murder mystery in here, because this book has been on my shelf for years. It is so well written, and very enticing. If you are a crime/mystery junkie like me, you will enjoy this good read! It’s also a bit longer than some of my recommendations, so should take you some time to get through it!

No. 8: “The Professor and the Madman” by Simon Winchester

This is a really unconventional recommendation for a Summer read, because it is non-fiction and does have a lot of historical context to it. I read this for one of my English classes in college, but friends…I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. This book takes you through the history of the making of the Oxford English Dictionary and it is absolutely fascinating. I guarantee you, it’ll be a quick read, and you will learn so much along the way. You won’t regret snagging a copy of this tale.

No. 9: “A Love Letter Life” by Jeremy & Audrey Roloff

I thought it would be fun to end my list with one more book that is still on my list. I haven’t read it yet, but I absolutely adore this couple and their brand. All about #beating50percent, they focus on the fight for our marriages, and how to cultivate relationships with our spouse that are joy-filled, and ultimately God-glorifying. I’m excited to snag a copy of this book and read it this Summer!
